Our Wooko Makandie team is deeply invested in promoting Maroon cultural heritage and fostering personal growth through a variety of dedicated projects and initiatives.
OKANISI NFT
The Ndyuka people, also known as Aukan are one of Suriname’s six Maroon peoples and are also present in French Guiana. They speak the Ndyuka language and are divided into the Opu.
MAROON MEMORIAL
The “Maroon Memorial” project primarily targets the older generation of Aukan Maroons in the Netherlands, Suriname, and the diaspora, aiming to make heritage more accessible to them.
DIITABIKI MUSEUM
In 2015, the Gaanman (paramount chief) of the Ndyuka sought assistance from the Dutch Cultural Heritage Agency to preserve and promote Ndyuka heritage.

In 2021 we had the honour to access the photo collection of the National Archive and Utrechts Archive consisting of photo’s and video’s from the 50’s and 60’s on which images out of the Surinamese-Marron community is captured.
HISTORY
The Maroons were the enslaved people that, that fought themselves free from the plantations during the colonial era, and founded various communities in alongside the rivers in the inlands of Suriname. That is where they developed their own unique (sub-) cultures, rituals, norms and values.

DIITABIKI MUSEUM
The pangi is a long, rectangular cloth that women from the Marron community wrap around their waists to above their navels. But the pangi is more than just an object.
